Salt Water Intrusion

Saltwater intrusion from saline groundwater systems has plagued other coastal aquifer systems.

Saltwater intrusion from saline groundwater systems has plagued other coastal aquifer systems such as the 800-Foot Sands. Excessive or unsustainable withdrawals of water from the aquifer can lower the water table levels that were once over 100 above sea level, far below the sea level. This can offset the balance of the freshwater and the saline waters below in these indirectly connected aquifer systems. The threat of saltwater intrusion is much more limited in center of the Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer system, though along the coastal stretches of the aquifer, where the ground water is exposed to salty surface water, saltwater intrusion can be a potential concern.
